Royal Canberra Golf Club boasts a highly qualified team of Accredited PGA of Australia Professionals who are available to provide tee-to-green instruction and club fitting with TrackMan and Video Analysis technology for golfers of every age and ability.

Lisa Jean – Head Teaching Professional PGA

We are pleased to announce the recruitment of Lisa Jean as the Club’s new Head Teaching Professional. Lisa turned professional in 2004 after  attending Oklahoma State University on a scholarship (Deans Scholar List). She gained full status on the Ladies European Tour in 2004 and competed for 6 years until injury sent her into early retirement. Her impressive background includes roles in Golf Operations at Huntingdale, as well as Head Teaching Professional roles at Albert Park and Murray Downs. Lisa has been a PGA of Australia member since 2010 and possesses exceptional skills in Trackman and video annalysis software. Lisa is a proud Callaway Ambassador. Lesson’s with Lisa will be available from Monday 15th April.

Pete Hayhoe – Golf Operations Manager PGA

In February 2023, Pete became a member of the team, having previously served as the Assistant General Manager at Fairbairn Golf Club for three years. Originally from Goulburn, Pete spent his formative years playing at the Goulburn Golf Club. Subsequently, he resided in Sydney for more than 15 years, holding positions such as Assistant Manager at the Thornleigh Driving Range and Assistant Professional at Gordon Golf Club.

Pete possesses a robust understanding of coaching and club fitting, backed by extensive experience in golf management over the years. Pete is our proud Titleist Ambassor.

Jacob Bugden – Golf Operations Supervisor PGA

Jacob joined the team as one of our Junior Members at Royal Canberra where he started a role as a Casual Golf Operations Assistant. He then went on to complete his PGA Diploma through the Associate Program and is now a Full Member of the PGA. Jacob possesses a robust understanding of all areas of the Golf Operations and has a passion for club fitting and repairs as well as looking after our entire cart fleet. Jacob is our proud Ping Ambassor.

ROYAL CANBERRA JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAM

Royal Canberra Golf Club offers a progressive program for children aged between 6 and 17 years who are interested in learning and acquiring the skills necessary to develop a lifelong love for the game of golf. Structured tuition is an essential part of the program with weekly practice sessions and on-course experience provided for juniors and cadets to participate in a fun and encouraging environment.

During the school terms and school holidays, Junior & Cadet Practices are conducted on weekends and are open to Members and non-members. Working in small groups of 6 – 10, the sessions target development in all areas of golf from physical literacy, the basic elements of the game such as putting, chipping and the full-swing, playing skills, social behaviour and etiquette. Non-members may participate in 2 free trial sessions before joining as a Cadet or Junior member. Before participating, non-members must contact and be assessed by Head Teaching Professional – Lisa Jean.

Group Separation 

To enhance the delivery and learning experience of Cadet and Junior Golfers we have divided the program into two major groups. The separation is mostly based on skill level and assists the Professional to communicate and conduct the session effectively to the overall level of the group.

Group 1: Full Juniors and Cadet A’s
Group 2: Cadet B’s and Cadet C’s

Cadet to Junior Progression

The Royal Canberra Golf Club Junior Program is comprised of levels that progressively transition from beginner to advanced levels of skill. The categories are: Cadet C, Cadet B, Cadet A, Junior Development and Junior Elite. Progression from one category to the next is assessed on handicap, skill competencies, rules knowledge, etiquette and social behaviour.

Cadet C – Introduction

  • Modified Short Course: Par 3’s 75m, Par 4’s 150m, Par 5’s 200m
  • Supervised On-Course
  • Handicapping to track playing ability

Cadet B – Beginner

  • Modified Short Course: Par 3’s 100m, Par 4’s 200m, Par 5’s 275m
  • Supervised On-Course
  • Handicapping to track playing ability

Cadet A – Advanced

  • Modified Gold Tee course (approximately 70-75% of full course length)
  • Supervised On-Course
  • Handicapping to track playing ability

Junior*

  • Full course length (Girls: Red Tees, Boys: White Tees)
  • Official Golf Australia (GA) Handicap
  • Eligible for ACT-Monaro DGA Junior Pennant
  • Eligible to practice & participate in Members competitions (unsupervised)
  • Eligible to participate in local, regional and national junior events
  • Junior Development Squad: GA Handicap 10.0 and above
  • Junior Elite Squad: GA Handicap 9.9 and below

School holiday clinics run over 3 days in each of the school term breaks.

  • The clinics are organised and run by qualified PGA Professionals who all have current  “working with children” credentials in a fun and safe environment.
  • There is no golf experience required at the clinics and are open to all skill levels
  • Age ranges from 8 to 17 years of age

Interclub Events

There are many major interclub events that the Junior and Cadet Members are eligible to participate in pending selection in the respective squads, for example:

ACT Monaro DGA Mixed Junior Pennant

  • Full Junior 1 and Junior 2 Members category only
  • Played during February to April

Cadet Membership Conditions

Our Cadet category of membership is designed to assist and develop young people in both practice and play.

Young people between the ages of 6 and 17 years may become Cadet Members of Royal Canberra Golf Club on the following basis:

  • Cadet Membership is for a maximum period of two years (4 x 6 month Cadetships).
  • Junior Golf Program Code of Conduct will be required to be signed by both a parent and child participating in the program
  • use of practice facilities
  • no reciprocal rights
  • Practice sessions will be provided by one of our PGA teaching professionals at no extra cost to Members.
  • All behaviour and course etiquette will be carefully monitored by the Head Teaching Professional and Golf Shop Staff.

JUNIOR & CADET GOLF PROGRAM FY 2023-24

Cost:

  • No Club Entrance Fee
  • An all-inclusive subscription fee of $500 for 6 months
  • Any fees paid as a Junior Cadet, will be offset against the Entrance Fee on joining the Club as a full Junior Member

ON COURSE EXPERIENCES

The practice range is a fantastic place to shape a good golf swing and to improve your technique; however, we all know that the game of golf is played in an ever-changing environment. Playing lessons provide the ideal learning environment for improving your score. You will learn shot making, hitting off uneven lies, course management, pre-shot routines, playing in the wind, and short game specialty shots.
